Arriva London Enviro200s ENs/ENNs, ENSs/ENRs, ENLs, ENXs

I've somewhat finished my testament for the VLAs/VLWs I loved, mainly the former, but alas. I move on. To midibuses. A complete mess made by the fusion of Arriva Southern Counties/the Shires into Arriva London but hey ho. The latter already using ex-London ENLs anyway.

Arriva London South ENL1-9

New in April 2007 as Arriva's first 10.2m Enviro200s for London, not headed to North as per most types but instead for South for the uptake of T31 (Forestdale - New Addington Homestead Way) from South Croydon (TC), with it's PVR of 8. The T31 was retained in 2014 but was withdrawn 17 months later.

Since then they've taken up the role of floats in the fleet, as far south east as Dartford (DT), in Essex at Grays (GY) for 347/375, east for Barking (DX)'s only single deck route 325, Wood Green (WN)'s only dual door single deck route 184, as well as neighbouring Thornton Heath (TH). I've personally seen one 07reg holed inside Norwood (N), it can only be between an ENS and ENL and the latter's more likely. It's gone at this point probably. Next up, ENLs 3 and 5-9 have been earmarked to be replaced by 313's ENX1-8 due to them not being Euro6, they are old too and have long surpassed the route they were bought for, six foot under for a long time.

ENL8-10 have relocated to Dartford (DT) for 469 alongside ENL77-79 and ENX28-30.

Length of 10.2m, B29D spec. Esteban Ciclo seating. Euro 4 emissions Cummins ISBe4.5 160hp engine coupled to a 5-speed Allison 2100 gearbox.

ENL1 LJ07ECW: Transfer to Wood Green (WN) 10/2015. Transfer to Clapton (CT) 06/2018. Sent to Edmonton (EC) for disposal. Preserved by Bromley Bus Preservation Group.

Arriva London North ENS1-14

Majority of these were registered in March 2007 but the double digit ENSs in June. This is reflected with it's PVR of 9 as a Clapton Nightingale Road to Holloway route. It was extended 4 months later to it's current terminus of Chalk Farm Morrisons. Nevertheless the unwanted route 393 operated by TfL themselves under the guise of East Thames Buses who gave the route new DAF SB120 9.4m Wright Cadets found a different home once someone bid for the route. Arriva taking interest from their Clapton (CT), now and then ping-ponging to Ash Grove (AE) where TfL themselves based it initially. Though the route eventually switched operators to Metroline, filling their hole in Holloway (HT) rather tightly.

The ENSs didn't see another allocation but just like T31's ENLs they filled the float role, for the one of two other 9.6m routes at the time, 410 (Crystal Palace - Wallington Shotfield). The other route being W6 which received new MMCs, below.

Length of 9.3m, B24D spec. Esteban Ciclo seating. Euro 4 emissions Cummins ISBe4.5 140hp engine coupled to a 5-speed Allison 2100 gearbox.

Guildford & West Surrey 3976-3981 & Kent Thameside 3982-3996

10.2m Surrey's 3976-3981

Registered in June 2007 for a triumphant entry into Kingston by Arriva! Not from London which would've meant the 57 leaving, I wouldn't want that. But it did, to Go-Ahead... moving on, the 465 with a majority of it's routeing lying in Surrey, starting from Dorking going past Leatherhead and finally entering London at Chessington with it's kink border shape due to Epsom refusing to be in London, then through past Hook and dead straight to Kingston. A PVR of 5 for a half hourly service. Reasonable. Perhaps until you learn of that subsidiary's problems with finances. That lead to Metrobus jumping in with the save 2 years into 465's contract in 2009 as well as saving other routes from Arriva's departure, giving the routes and buses to Metrobus as they please, and so the 'ENLs' gained Metrobus logos until Quality Line won the route. Just like Arriva, Metrobus used the route for commercial purposes, after a refurbishment to B34F spec and conversion to single door in September 2012. Eventually receiving a refurbishment to Metrobus' newer livery and interior, as well as LEDs changed from orange to white in late 2019.

10.8m Kent's 3982-3996

also registered between June and August 2007 to Arriva Kent Thameside for the replacement of 10.7m Darts (some previously single door) for route 286 (Sidcup Queen Mary's Hospital - Greenwich, Cutty Sark). Unlike the rest of the Enviro200s under Arriva for TfL services, they haven't succumbed to the renumbering into Arriva London's numbering system due to the subsidiaries falling under the same operating license North uses, where the interesting scenario of Dartford (DT) being an Arriva London North garage by license but eventually on April Fools day 2020 management's side moved to the South division. Regardless these were done for when 286 was lost to Go-Ahead. However Arriva had plans for these... convert them to single door and keep them for Kent.

Arriva Southern Counties 3997-3999 (ENL77-79)

Registered in December 2007. I have little clue for the majority of these Southern Counties Enviros but I'll take a shot. For route 370's debut into TfL service. Perhaps for it's frequency increase from every 20 to every 15 as it debuted. Pretty much spare Enviro200s used for 375's official contract after it's emergency contract with Blue Triangle covering for withdrawal of Arriva's commercial 500 due to Low Emission Zone crisis, the 499 meanwhile had 3 SB120 Cadets allocated and one Enviro200, so much for it's planned frequency increase. As an aside, 3999's operator is listed as 'Arriva Guildford & Surrey'. Dorking vibes here...

Reallocated in 2016 as part of existing allocation to newly-won route 469 at Dartford (DT) joining ENL8-10 and ENX28-30. Effectively school extras only in late 2020, so will be withdrawn as not upgraded to Euro 6.

Length of 10.2m, B29D spec. Esteban Ciclo seating. Euro 4 emissions Cummins ISBe4.5 160hp engine coupled to a 5-speed Allison 2100 gearbox.

Arriva London North EN1-13

Enfield (E), for the mess of a single decker route with people flocking back and forth to IKEA. The 192. Registered in January 2008 as the first single door Enviro200s in the fleet and overall for the North subsidiary. As per normal for busy suffering routes these took the beating of a lifetime for a straight 7 years. As for Go-Ahead whose order for Daimler OM934 engine'd Wright StreetLites were late, let alone the supposed temporary, but wrong order for Cummins ISBe4.5 engine'd models, these Enviro200s were hired by Go-Ahead just like when they hired 100's own YX10 Enviro200s, but unlike Abellio's lot these were coded... TEN...1-13 (EN5 not hired)

In any case, prior to this type, 192 had brand new LF52 PDLs, preceded by Northern Counties bodied Darts, Northern Counties being the predecessor to Plaxton so there is some loyalty down this heritage tree. Either way some of these have been kept back for the 318 as part of it's retain, more below.

Fun fact: EN9/12 strayed on E10 (Ealing Broadway - Northolt Islip Manor)

Arriva Kent Thameside 1643-1649 (EN16-22)

New to Dartford (DT) registered in February 2008 for the only other 8.8m route besides the 162... the 233 (Swanley - Eltham). Time passed and the route was lost to Metrobus with new 8.9m Enviro200s. Oh well. The 318, a route no one would touch, received them as part of it's retain in 2013, duly refurbished. And as only Northumberland Park (NP) have touched the route and they're near full (probably), might as well retain them with these beaten up ageing Enviro200s again! During the end of the contract that started in 2018 they'd reach the age of 15 years, the theoretical maximum for buses in London. They have shuffled from Dartford (DT) to Lea Valley (LV) [closed] to Edmonton (EC) to Enfield (E) to Stamford Hill (SF) [making space for 191 and keeping some 67 workforce] and now Tottenham (AR) again with closure of Stamford Hill (SF).

On the plus side, the Darts that the ENs replaced have been freed to do things such as help E10, become trainers, PDL138 of which had an engine replacement with... a Cummins ISBe6.7, something you'd find in a spare Enviro400, though restricted from 250hp to 205hp on an ADL Dart whose native Cummins engine isn't above 140hp.

Arriva Southern Counties 4000-4010 ENL80-90

New April 2008 to Arriva Southend. Now, I mentioned the 370 getting an increase in frequency from every 20 to every 15 but it doesn't add up, perhaps I made a mistake, in any case. The 370, just like the Central London routes, half a century old. It was cut from Grays to Lakeside whereas 373 (Romford via Aveley to Grays) was cut to Upminster. Transitioning from Arriva Southend to Arriva... it's still Southend, or known as Kent Thameside or Southern Counties, whatever rolls your dice, the 370 went from half hourly joint as every 15 mins with 373 to standalone every 20, and immediately increased in frequency to every 15 mins standalone, which required something. the allocation to these Enviro200s was indeed Grays (GY), 11 for a PVR of 10, which 370 coincidentally had. Later on the route converted to double deck with spare DLAs from 160 which received new in it's 2011 retain. Upon renewal of the 370 it received freshly-discarded LJ05-reg VLAs from 249's loss to Go-Ahead.

Eventually these Enviro200s settled in Dartford (DT), withdrawn after loss of 469/B12 and sold to Ensign.

Some of these have been taken into HCT Group for school extras on the single deck routes.

Length of 10.2m, B29D spec. Esteban Ciclo seating. Euro 6 (converted from Euro 4 with Selective Catalytic Reduction) emissions Cummins ISBe4.5 160hp engine coupled to a 5-speed Allison 2100 gearbox.

Arriva London North ENL10-20

New October 2008. These were North's first dual door Enviro200s, for route 491 (Waltham Cross - North Middlesex Hospital) whose frequency was increased, jumping it's PVR from 6 to 10. Nothing special in Enfield (E) until 491 was lost to Go-Ahead from Northumberland Park (NP) in 2012. These Enviro200s were refurbished and evicted to Arriva the Shires' Garston (GR) for circulars H18/H19, Harrow via Harrow Weald and Kenton.

ENL8-10 have relocated to Dartford (DT) for 469 alongside ENL77-79 and ENX28-30.

Arriva Kent Thameside 4023-4027 (ENL91-95)

New January 2009. Another batch of Enviro200s for the mostly-non-TfL counties. Both routes B12/B15, a win and a retain had their contracts start in January 2009, B15's PVR of 5 at the time neatly fits this batch. Plus with a large pool of single decks a spare isn't a must.

Length of 10.2m, B29D spec. Esteban Ciclo seating. Euro 6 (converted from Euro 4 with Selective Catalytic Reduction) emissions Cummins ISBe4.5 160hp engine coupled to a 5-speed Allison 2100 gearbox.

Arriva London South ENL21-29

New February 2009. Another batch of Enviro200s. The 166 which wasn't unusual but now sticks out like a sore thumb being the only other daily route with short workings. A PVR of 8, of which Sunday excluded a 60 min service to Epsom General Hospital as opposed to only running to Banstead from West Croydon. These ENLs were stood down upon retain in 2018 with the secondhand ENLs ex-Stagecoach ousted from Garston (GR)'s closure and loss. There was speculation of fire-damaged ENL28 to be converted to electric with Magtec, you'll find their motors in Optare's electrics. Though this turned out to be another TC native, PDL123.

In August 2019 an extra paralleling Epsom journeys, 166X (Purley-Banstead) came to fruition to service Lavender Farm's flower show, near the Oak Tree stop. This revived ENL21 from storage rotting away at it's life.

Arriva Kent Thameside 4028-4035 (ENX20-27)

New March 2009. The first set of 10.8m Enviro200s for the TfL side, which was succeeded by a non-TfL order of 24 (B38F spec) 10.8m Enviro200s, some with 499 branding (Bluewater - Gravesend - Riverview Park), some eventually transferred to Guildford. Still, for route 428 (Erith - Bluewater), and to be used against the B15 contract as of typing in October 2020, these 8 ENXs served it's PVR of 8 well, cutting close with no spares as well but hey ho.

Unlike the rest of 469's allocation, these being 10.8m instead of 10.2m did make it one of the niche routes allocated two different lengths, P4 being one of them with Enviro200s scrambled from every corner literally (246, 372, 488. Only the latter being 10.2m). Still, Dartford (DT) kept their GN10 ENXs for route 469, which subsequentally went from smart blind Enviro200s to manual blind Enviro200s, not to even mention the age difference of these being older.

Length of 10.8m, B31D spec Esteban Ciclo seating. Euro 6 (converted from Euro 4 with Selective Catalytic Reduction) emissions Cummins ISBe4.5 160hp engine coupled to a 5-speed Allison 2100 gearbox.

Arriva London North ENL30-48

Another 10.2m batch for North following 491's, this time for Wood Green (WN) for one of the busiest single decker routes. 184. Registered May and June 2009 for the route that spans Turnpike Lane to Barnet Chesterfield Road with a PVR of 17 on renewal, peaking at 19 upon the next renewal in 2016. This batch, like any other Arriva Enviro200 batch in London, are currently in notorious condition. Though prior to refurb they weren't that bad supposedly, then again this every 8-9 min route with busy loads would chip at the condition of the buses over the 12 year course they've had.

Naturally when a route is lost, only two options are present. Reused for other routes/purposes or withdrawn. For now, after 184's settled a few weeks, some have been sold.

Length of 10.2m, B29D spec. Esteban Ciclo seating. Euro 4 emissions Cummins ISBe4.5 160hp engine coupled to a 5-speed Allison 2100 gearbox.

ENL54 LJ59LVN, Balham

Another one. 10.2m batch for North East. Remember that name? Me neither, Barking (DX) have been doing well for themselves with gaining a few routes here and there, building their presence in East London, these registered in March 2010. One such win was the 325 (East Beckton Savacentre Sainsbury's - Prince Regent) with a miniscule PVR of 11. This did rise to 12 when it's contract extended for two years, allowing one to stay... the 173 converted in October 2015 using Ts 66-83 new to 38 to convert it to double deck and then notorious 78, the 173 merely joins it and now supposedly 428. Without getting off track, 173's own ENLs (next paragraph) were reallocated to 325 making the older ENLs on-paper to 325 leave for the 255 (Pollards Hill - Balham), which was supposed to receive new in 2010 itself, in any case two years later in 2017 the 255 was retained with these ENLs, ENLs it could've had new to itself.

Length of 10.2m, B29D spec. Esteban Ciclo seating. Euro 6 (converted from Euro 5 with Selective Catalytic Reduction) emissions Cummins ISBe4.5 160hp engine coupled to a 5-speed Allison 2100 gearbox.

Arriva Southern Counties 4068-4079

Ain't Arriva Southend used to more new for bigger routes. Registered July and August 2010 for the 66 respectively as you'll see, weirdly the batch is half registered in Kent, (the GN) and half by ADL themselves at their Scarborough factory in Yorkshire (YX). Doesn't change them being 10.8m Enviro200s and sure they were reused elsewhere after, you guessed it, the 66 joined the 78 and 370 in double deck conversions.

Three 'ENXs' were kept for the successful win of 469, joining ENL8-10 and ENL77-79. The other 9 ended up refurbished (to B38F spec?) in October 2014 to single door with leather seating and power sockets for Arriva North East's 64 (Arniston Centre - Sherburn Village), complete with code changes because it ain't Arriva if there ain't a code change. In late 2020 their fate has been sealed as withdrawal, leaving only ENX2-27 at Dartford (DT) for B15.

Arriva London North ENL62-74

And another one. New October 2010 for the other Barking (DX) single deck route, 173 (Goodmayes, King George Hospital - Beckton Station) also with a PVR of 11, though this also grew but to 13 instead. As mentioned above these swiftly remained in Barking (DX) despite 173's double deck conversion, giving the older stock to the not-retained route whose Cadets were in terrible shape.

Arriva London North ENX1-8

First for the London subsidiary is the 10.8m length Enviro200. (Ignore the Kent Thameside aka Southern Counties) Route 313 already had the bizarre 10.8m long Wright Cadets were every DWL was 10.1m except 313's batch, the 9.4m variant adopting the DWS code, with DW being taken by the double decker DB250 also bodied by Wright. In any case, these were new in October 2011 amongst the mass of new double decker DB300s, B5LHs and E400s for North London.

Either way, these Enviro200s are, for lack of a better term, hated by drivers. The type doesn't age well with rattles either from a passenger's perspective. With 313's gradual conversion to New Routemasters replaced by 38's cut in frequency from every 3-4 to every 4-5 in October 2020, it's released it's puny amount of ENXs, supposedly heading off to Dartford (DT) temporarily for the B15, against it's contract.

Arriva London EN14/15, ENS15-28 & ENX9-19

In the left corner we have short 9.6m models, uplifted with the facelift from 9.3m. In the right corner we have long 10.8m models for another route previously allocated long vehicles, 289. The former however has more history to it than just being abysmal, even if both batches are together under the same shed. Then you have EN14/15 which are under RATP so...
Registered between June and July 2012 the ENSs were for both 397 and W11 from Edmonton (EC) after their transfers from Lea Valley (LV), months after their contracts had started from February and March respectively, replacing the ADLs/PDLs on 397, whilst W11 was a win from First's Northumberland Park (NP). Until both were lost to CT Plus' Walthamstow (AW) with new Enviro200 MMCs... Still, these found their opportunity rather immediately with 410's upcoming tender, which formed as the existing portion of the New & Existing allocation for 410. Supposedly these were good vehicles but now I've seen time and time again their hopelessness.

(History below for EN14/15) Length of 8.9m, B25F spec. Esteban Civic V2 seating. Euro 5 EEV (converted from Euro 5 with Selective Catalytic Reduction) emissions Cummins ISBe4.5 140hp engine coupled to a 5-speed Allison 2100 gearbox.

EN14 LJ12BYW: New to route 379's retain. Transfer to Enfield (E). In store unused between 03/2017 and 01/2018. Allocated to E10 due to reliability issues with E10's YX14 batch, as a result moved to RATP's Hounslow Heath (HH), coded SDE20295. Transfer to Epsom (EB) 06/2019.
EN15 LJ12BYX: New to route 379's retain. Transfer to Enfield (E). In store unused between 03/2017 and 01/2018. Allocated to E10 due to reliability issues with E10's YX14 batch, as a result moved to RATP's Hounslow Heath (HH), coded SDE20296. Transfer to Epsom (EB) 03/2019.

As of January 2024, these sent to Arriva Yorkshire? (reported 13reg, the ENSs are 12reg) This is follows 410's conversion to full SLS from 450's loss.

ENX10 LJ12BYT, Thornton Heath

As for the ENXs, it's not all roses either, frankly, I loathe them. Disgust them. They've stayed solidly on the 289 for their life thus far, and refurbished. Nothing more to it.

Length of 10.8m, B31D spec. Esteban Civic V2 seating. Euro 6 EEV (converted from Euro 5 with Selective Catalytic Reduction) emissions Cummins ISBe4.5 160hp engine coupled to a 5-speed Allison 2100 gearbox.

Arriva Kent Thameside ENR1-7

The first batch of Enviro200 MMCs for Arriva, headed for Dartford (DT) and registered in January 2016 for the only single door route in that depot... B13 (New Eltham - Bexleyheath Shopping Centre). Ordered as replacement for likewise unusually single door Wright Cadets, even though that's their shortest length (9.4m), the Enviro200 MMCs replicated that feature, albeit the shortest model being 9.0m short. Then the decision of coding. R, without much meaning other than it's purpose to separate it from regular ENSs. Fun fact: ENR1 strayed on E10 (Ealing Broadway - Northolt Islip Manor).

Following the loss of B13 in January 2023, these eventually moved to Tottenham (AR) to aid the poor reliability of 318's older Enviro200s. Excluding ENR1 which had a defective gearbox.

Nothing special though, only 5 vehicles for the Monday-Saturday 377 (Oakwood - Ponders End, Bus Garage). Registered June 2016, these based at Enfield (E).

Even more, but not for a homecoming route, but for replacing the LJ54-reg PDLs on the W6 (Edmonton Green - Southgate) which was retained and needed new vehicles, or judging by 318's retain the Darts could probably last another term. 20+ year old Leyland Olympians and Metrobus were reused during the turn of the century with TfL's money crisis then. Arriva London North ENN55-71

As of writing, the latest batch of Enviro200 MMCs in Arriva's fleet for the homecoming of 192, joining the W4, registered October and November 2019. The 192 slots back in Enfield (E) being it's original home, Lea Valley (LV) is long gone anyway and Edmonton (EC) is more of an afterthought of preferably allocating the buses themselves only where applicable for maximum confusion but operational convenience, or so but hey ho.
Unlike the last round the 192 has grown, evident in it having EN1-13 but now 17 vehicles ENN55-71. PVR rose from 2007's 12, to 14 in 2013 to 15 upon it's return, given it needs more into it's schedule for it's reliability. You'd think Northumberland Park (NP) being on-route would do well but they do well otherwise.

Arriva London ENL101-112

Second-hand Enviro200s new May/June 2011 to Stagecoach East London at Barking (DX) for route 62 (Barking Gascoigne Estate - Marks Gate) as part of a large batch including 366. Anyways, some sold off since it's contract renewal which resulted in it's timely double decker conversion for Crossrail, regardless, it's a busy route so deserved it anyway like other conversions to double deck (head scratching D8)'s. Garston (GR) got them from Arriva's eBay hunt (okay not literally, you get my point). Don't think these Enviro200s haven't moved around more...

Sometime upon Stagecoach's return from ELBG's hopeless clutches some 11reg Enviro200s transferred to Plumstead (PD) to centralise 469's Optare Versas at Barking (BK) where they'd be friends with 396's Versas, thereby swapping 62/469's allocations. Sold off in May 2016 when 62 converted to double deck, Arriva got hold of them just two months later, replacing some of the large batch of 2006 Wright Cadets which proved to be unreliable towards their end, with only two years left on 268/288/303/305's clocks, in practice were allocated to the 268 (Finchley Road O2 Centre - Golders Green. These then ended up in store until their next opportunity... Croydon (TC)'s 166 which was retained with existing, and so duly refurbished with Arriva's moquette.

As of July 2022, some ENLs were withdrawn as their reliability worsened to bad levels, with spare ENXs from 313 topping up the ENLs, then eventually replace some ENLs.

Length of 10.2m, B29D spec. Lazzerini Practico seating. Euro 6 (converted from Euro 5 with Selective Catalytic Reduction) emissions Cummins ISBe4.5 160hp engine coupled to a 3-speed Voith DIWA823.3E gearbox.
