Arriva London: VLA1-179/VLW1-199

The order of 372 low floor buses made by Volvo and bodied by Alexander/Wright was the order and law to replace the step-entrance buses that remained in London.

VLA1-55:
VLA20 LJ03MXP, East Dulwich

These would've been DAF DB250LF's if the production didn't cease [redacted] These are earmarked as Arriva's best B7TLs due to their great reliability and raw beastiness, with great mechanics in Norwood (N).

Anyways, these were ordered to convert routes 2, 68 and X68 against 253/254's contracts (better the ex-242 S-reg jumped ship elsewhere instead of the 2, 198 taking one hit) with 176 gaining existing low-floor vehicles, ex-route 68, this, being the most prestigious of Norwood's routes at the time, which was already allocated [near-new] DLAs! Thus 2 and 68 got the full share with 176 taking the remainder once 68/X68 left the picture. These VLAs ever since stayed in Norwood... 

VLA47 LJ53BAO, Crown Dale, Norwood

In December 2015, VLA1-16 became the first 10.6m VLAs in Arriva London's fleet to transfer to a garage that isn't Norwood. These were re-allocated to 123 to oust the infamous unreliable 54reg VLA79-99 which did not have emission mods and were almost meeting TfL's Low Emission Zone deadline.

VLA25 LJ53BFO, Kennington

Following the retain of 2/N2, many earlier numbered VLAs were stood down in favour of new Volvo B5LH Wright Gemini 3 hybrids. The 176, lost to Go-Ahead, was the final hammer to withdraw these classic buses. I will never forget these beautiful machines.
Many VLAs that were reallocated to 123 were scrapped, whilst majority that haven't found a new home elsewhere in the country. Read below for full details.

VLA41 joined VLA1-16 temporarily whilst London Overground was down but it made a return to home.

These all were 10.6m in length, 12100kg in weight and had the Volvo D7C engine at 250hp engine equipped to a ZF Ecomat 5HP504, a 5-speed gearbox.

VLA56-69 & 70-73:
VLA64 LJ04YWT, West Norwood Station

Arriva won route 337 and housed it at the Sightseeing Tour garage, Wandsworth (WD), now owned by RATP. The order was actually DB250 Geminis, but those were sent to Brixton (BN) to convert 137 to one person operation with new VLA56-69 replacing the DWs, lovely Voiths they are. Specifically Voith DIWA 864.3E, a 4-speed gearbox. However, when Arriva lost the 337 in 2011, they were sent to Norwood (N) to be allocated to 417, ridding the older DLAs.
VLA70-73 meanwhile, were new to Norwood (N) in 2004 as extra buses, allocated to 68?

As of October 2018, the final VLAs of South London, VLA56/57 transferred to Barking (DX) after Norwood (N)'s refurbishment and Euro 6 conversion of Enviro400s were done. This was to aid the speed of refurbishing Barking (DX)'s VDL DB300's who were questionably short on double deckers. VLA56 was deemed scrapped as it was stripped for spare parts for the other VLAs in it's stay in East London though, leaving 57 to solider on past the transfer of 128 to Stagecoach.

VLA57 has been preserved since, along with VLA131.

These all were 10.6m in length, 12100kg in weight and had the Volvo D7C engine at 250hp engine equipped to a Voith DIWA864.3E, a 4-speed gearbox.


VLA74-100:
VLA74 LJ54BEO, Tulse Hill
Arriva London North's first VLAs, home to Tottenham (AR). Allocated to routes 123 and 243. Nothing much here, however VLA74-8 transferred to Norwood (N) in exchange for some of VLA101-23 which I will mention exactly what occurred in the next set.

VLA79-99 are all withdrawn, most acquired by Ensignbus with conversion to single door.
VLA99/100 were revived as Vantage Power hybrid converts, but these didn't last long either, they were mostly off-road and broke down a lot.

These all were 10m in length and had the Volvo D7C engine at 250hp engine equipped to a ZF Ecomat 5HP504, a 5-speed gearbox.
Except VLA99/100 which had a Cummins ISB6.7E6 engine coupled with no gearbox but a series hybrid system.

VLA101-128:
VLA105 LJ05BKZ, Whitehall

This batch of 05reg is Norwood (N)'s third! Allocated to routes 249, 432 and 689/690 to finally rid of the remaining Leyland Olympians in the garage. However allocation was tight considering only 2/3 spares. Come 2012 when 249 was lost to Go-Ahead, all these VLAs were spread to different garages. One of which was Arriva Southern Counties' Grays (GY) which saw the conversion of 370 from Enviro200 to double deck.

VLA101-3 went to Edmonton (EC) for route 123 in exchange for VLA74-78. 
VLA104-109 went to Brixton (BN) to cascade any other remaining DLA. 
VLA110-21 (coded to 6110-21) were refurbished and transferred to double deck route 370. 
VLA122/3 to Garston (GR)
VLA124-8 to Barking (DX).

When route 109 was welcomed by Abellio in late February 2015, VLA104-109 slowly transferred over to Barking (DX). Of which in April 2016 VLA104-6 transferred to Edmonton (EC) to aid the 54reg withdrawal. VLA109 transferred to Garston (GR) to help the withdrawal of their remaining DLAs to meet the Low Emission Zone deadline, followed by Barking (DX)'s original VLAs, which I will explain in the next segment.

VLA129-143:
VLA130 LJ05GME, Claybury Broadway

This is Barking (DX)'s own batch of VLAs and all are still intact in the garage except that Garston (GR) needed dire help to aid withdrawal of their DLAs to meet the Low Emission Zone deadline. The VLAs are for 128 and also belonged to 20, to cascade existing fleet and the contract gain of route 128 from TfL-owned East Thames Buses.

VLA129, 130, 133, 135/6 are the ones which transferred to Garston (GR) circa. 2016 but returned to Barking (DX).

As of November 2019, some have soldiered past their expiry date of 128 with Barking (DX) having off road buses not helped by many allocated Enviro400s on loan/allocated permanently to the south; one of T66/67 as extras for Croydon (TC) increases and the other for the 627?; T68/69 as refurb floats for 250's LJ10 refurbs; T82/83 reallocated to 690 upon contract renewal.

These all were 10m in length and had the Volvo D7C engine at 250hp engine equipped to a ZF Ecomat 5HP504, a 5-speed gearbox.

VLA144-179:
VLA161 LJ55BSZ, Brixton

These are the last batch of VLAs built. These are the second batch of VLAs to be withdrawn permanently, however not all. One thing to note in this batch, unlike the preceding batches this batch alone stood out for two reasons. Unlike the previous VLAs with Esteban Civic seating, these ones all had Urban 90 seating, which is essentially sitting on a mass of plastic with patches of duvet cover glued to it. The other reason whilst not so significant, is ZF's 6-speed gearbox which harmonised with the 250hp engine to bring forth great acceleration. Personally I'd prefer the 03/53-reg but I will never turn down a 55-reg.
To remove the last Routemasters in daily service, Arriva ordered their last batch of B7TLs, for route 159. A batch of 30 VLAs. As of now, most are withdrawn. Some with Arriva Max for Durham route 46 and more. VLA164-79 still went strong, which were in Garston (GR), for route 142 which is now in RATP's hands. Since, they were withdrawn... and stored in Beddington Farm thereafter moved to Arriva's Hitchin for storage since trainer E400s and ex-GR DLAs took up the space in Beddington to allow for 202 to slot in Norwood (N).
Some have been on LO-T service, the rail replacement for the London Overground from Barking to Walthamstow.

Fun fact: Brixton (BN) often kept this unserviced at weekends with 159 instead allocated DW-class DB250s. Talk about royalty.

VLW1-85:
Since Arriva were impressed on Wright's work with their single deckers in the national fleet, Arriva bombarded in and took the first order of the double deck Gemini's for London, possibly even the UK! The initial order was 50, and so these were sent straight to Palmers Green (AD) for routes 102 and 141. The first two VLWs, VLW1 Y581UGC and VLW2 Y102UGC were the only Gemini's in London to have the old registration. The others housed in Wood Green (WN).
However as route 141 kept on transferring back and forth between Palmers Green (AD) and Wood Green (WN), part of the batch never had a settled home. Instantly the order changed to 85, being sent to Wood Green (WN) for their routes 141, 144 and 221. The progress of VLWs had a two month gap in 2003 between January and March and another between September and November. 
All of these are withdrawn with most (if not all) transferred to other Arriva homes, circa 2012-2015.

VLW86-96:
Route 242's share of the bulk order of VLWs since 2001, based in Clapton (CT).

VLW97-104:
As this sub-batch have strayed on the 168, I believe they were allocated to the route before going off to Enfield (E) in say 2010 when it got a contract renewal and introduction of partial allocation of brand new Ts 169-179. The VLWs later allocated to 349, these are also withdrawn from service, some acquired by Ensignbus.

VLW105-116:
An interesting batch, arrived in March 2003 thus given the 03 registration, however, the ones after were registered earlier in 2002 and must've started service before! This batch was route bound for the 20, as to remove the single-door ADL class. Years later in 2007 route 20 would transfer to Edmonton (EC) and downgraded to DLA class. Surprisingly these made the allocation for route 275 which was supposed to share the VLAs with route 128! This batch of VLWs are also withdrawn, some have made their way to Wood Green (WN), displacing the first sets of VLWs to Arriva's Midlands and North West divisions.

VLW117-199:
I'm led to believe VLW117-129, the 52reg of this segment, to be allocated to route 168. Anyways, following 168's transfer to Ash Grove (AE), it intermixed with Ash Grove (AE)'s original VLWs. VLW117-125 are withdrawn from London service.

VLW130-79; Part of this sub-batch was allocated to route 253. Of which the route was based in Clapton (CT) with route 242 and the other half at Stamford Hill (SF), when split into 253 and 254, the 253 was allocated the shorter 10m VLWs and based in Clapton (CT). When 73 converted to double deckers, 253 and 254 had an allocation swap. However I'm puzzled of the remainder, unless I miscounted 168's batch. They're still running on Ash Grove (AE)'s routes.

VLW198 LJ53BFE, North Finchley Bus Station

VLW180-99, these unique 10.6m VLWs became solely for route 253 but are now the new allocation for 221. Though new to Tottenham (AR) and allocated to 76/243...? Anyways, they've strayed on [eventually] Ash Grove (AE)'s 168 and 254, the split of 253 which was in Stamford Hill (SF) initially then moved to Ash Grove (AE) to make space for 73 however swapped allocations with 253. Thus 254 is allocated the 10m VLWs. These were the only 10.6m Gemini bodied B7TLs Arriva had.

Following the conversion of route 253 to HV operation, VLW180-99 all transferred to Wood Green (WN) displacing the older vehicles in the garage.
