Withdrawn Volvo B9TLs

Like with my Withdrawn Enviro400s page, I list withdrawn B9TLs here and keep track of their movements if possible.

Volvo B9TL 10.4m / Wright Eclipse Gemini 2

MCV DD103, the VM1:

A different bodywork, from MCV, for the Volvo B9TL. Thus far we've had ADL apply their Enviro400 successfully, though only had one batch in London and a few in Ireland. On the only other hand, Wright also bodied the B9TL on their advanced Gemini, the Gemini 2. The DD103 was MCV's first take on a double decker.
Go-Ahead's VM1 (BJ11XGZ), trialled on then Silvertown (SI) of Docklands Buses 474. RATP London United's VM1 (BF62UXU) was trialled on H32. In the end, none of them stayed long, neither did MCV pick up orders from either operators. However, the Go-Ahead VM1 did stay in the shadows for quite a long time until being picked up by RATP's Bath operations.

VM1 BJ11XGZ: Acquired by Wessex and then Bath Bus Company (RATP) as A506 as late as 2015.
VM1 BF62UXU: Acquired by Wessex and then Bath Bus Company (RATP) as A507.

Totally did not forget about this batch of B9TLs... 27 VNs of different regs and codes for a PVR of 25. Moving on, these belonged to the 266 which was secluded in Atlas Road (AS) for the whateverth time under a different operator, the excuse this time being Crossrail took over Westbourne Park (X) for works but alas. Metroline lost the 266 from their dear office at Cricklewood (W) and First continued the train of B9TL Gemini 2's since the order for 83, 58, 427, 25 and now this route.
As of writing I'm busy with wrapping my head around Arriva's VLWs so I'll keep it brief. Arriva got some for 158 and coded them as VLW901+.

Go-Ahead WVL496-508:
This was the first batch of B9TLs withdrawn from London service out of the hundreds in the Go-Ahead empire, whilst at the time of withdrawal these could've been kept and allocated to the acquired 5, they were sent to another division of Go-Ahead in the North East. Originally, these handful of late B9TLs were new to the 22 alongside hybrid B5LHs in 2012. Five years later, the route is retained but with a full allocation of hybrids, made up of partially new buses. Thus these young B9TLs with life were to find a new home. These were leased to the Go-Ahead group.

VW1855 BF60UUO, Euston
I didn't forget about this batch, but I decided not to ache myself pointlessly but it'll leave a bad taste if I didn't add them in. Oh well.
Seven years after it's conversion to articulated 'bendy' single deckers in 2003, the route 18 (Euston - Sudbury) converted back to double deckers, with vehicle requirement spiraling from 28 to 48, an extra 11 from when it was previously double deck. Another solemn 7 years of taking the #2 spot for London's busiest bus route since 2010 into 2017 and RATP shockingly took a flagship off now-Metroline West's Willesden Junction (WJ), formerly owned by First until 2013. This resulted in 50 B9TLs all released at once and barely any were relocated within the Metroline empire. They were all sent off-lease.
Euro 5 EEV (emission enhanced vehicle) emissions, Volvo D9B 260hp engine coupled with the 6-speed ZF EcoLife gearbox.

90% of the batch of 53 Volvo B9TLs of 10.4m length on the sturdy Wright Eclipse Gemini 2 bodywork had an extensive refurbishment at Wrightbus for Lothian. Lothian got this batch of buses for it's own Low Emission Zone by converting these yet-young second-hand ex-London hardworking horses into Euro6 emission status.

Go-Ahead WVL386-412 and WVL413:
WVL410 (LX11CWP), Peckham
These buses, new in April 2011, were ordered for the retain of route 171 at New Cross (NX) also in April 2011. Since then, they've remained the stable allocation since.
In Spring 2018, New Cross (NX) had (should've) received brand new ultracapacitor E40Hs for the 36's renewal and standard battery ones for 171. Though, Catford had a green air corridor which forced buses to be Euro 6. It's more costly to upgrade B9TLs than E40Ds. The 171, not yet renewed or buses nearly all available, swapped it's B9TLs for 36's E400s until all of the hybrids for 36 have phased in. After that, these WVLs were sent off lease. 36's E40Ds were reallocated to 37. These B9TLs were originally meant to be allocated to the 37 but were sent off lease instead.

WVL413 LX11CWU: In the Orpington (MB) bus fire on the 22nd November 2018, this was one of 11 buses caught in the fire in the early morning. This was supposed to be used on the 51 from it's contract start on the 8th December but was a 'victim' of the fire. Previously allocated to 474 at Silvertown (SI) for it's contract renewal in 2011. The 474 was lost to Stagecoach in mid 2018 and these B9TLs were free for reuse, which later revealed to be 51. I jumped the gun but it'll be here for reference. Pretend I didn't mislead myself there.

Tower Transit VN36101-36165:

Martin Addison
VN36158 BJ11EAG, 25
Leadenhall Street
New between April and June 2011 to First Capital for the major uptake of route 25 from Stagecoach. Going from articulated 'bendy' single deckers to double deckers under the new contract to First. In 2013 First sold their operations to Tower Transit. A total of 65 B9TLs for a route with a then-PVR of 60. Obviously it fluctuated until it settled at 32 with frequency halved and cut short from Oxford Circus to Holborn Circus. Even with the uptake of routes 262/473 barely reaching 25's new lowered PVR. The 452 which was won 3 months prior which was the reason for the massive reduction of the 25, was also only able to take so much. As far as those three routes go, that's a minimum of 43 utilized out of the 65.
Half of the batch were delivered on the 4-speed Voith DIWA 864.5 gearbox with the other half on the 6-speed ZF EcoLife 6AP1200B gearbox. Euro 5 EEV (emission enhanced vehicle) emissions, Volvo D9B 260hp engine.

Metroline West VW1817-1841
New April 2010. The owned batch of ex-First B9TLs, bought for route 427 from Hayes (HZ). Originally the batch were sporty but at some point if such a comment was to surface, you'd be suspected for not joking. Perhaps that's too literal but in any case, these later-questionable B9TLs were the food that bit the all-praised newest Scania OmniCitys for 207 (due to Wright and ADL being full when Boris enacted an anti-bendy policy). After 207 itself was lost to the same Abellio London that claimed the 427, the buses went into storage at Willesden Junction (WJ) with a few creeping out to Edgware (EW) or as floats I imagine to places like Harrow Weald (HD) and Perivale (PA).

Go-Ahead London General WVN46-53
This 8-strong B9TL team were ordered for route 357, spanning Whipps Cross to Chingford Hatch. They continue leisurely at Northumberland Park (NP), through First's selling off to Go-Ahead, in turn gaining new codes reflected with the 'N', being novated. That's until 357's tender award where it became electric... some time later. The first four have been used for 486's retain rather quickly, swapping 357's allocation in the process but the last 4 have yet to be made use of. That's when 127's retain, albeit the allocation all over the place and varied, WVN50-2 transfered into Croydon (C), as for WVN53...

New to First Centrewest's Westbourne Park (X) for what I wish was either 28 or 295 but I'll correct this once I bother researching.
Either ways, these B9TLs were involved in a swapathon with some of 25's over at Lea Interchange (LI) before finally settlng at... LI. As of April 2021 only VN37996 was withdrawn for some odd reason with the rest being strong on the 28/452 and 58/D8 and the likes.

New November/December 2009, WVL274-302 to New Cross (NX) and WVL303-333 to Peckham (PM) respectively for routes 21 and 63.
Come 2016 both routes were to receive B5LH/Evosetis upon contract renewals but the 21 instead became a chosen one for a New Routemaster batch, with 21's ordered MHVs sent to 185 for it's contract retain, thus WVL274-277 floated around, WVL278-295 remained at it's garage for 321 and WVL296-312 moved to Bexleyheath (BX) to 132, WVL313-333 allocated to 180 moving with the route from Belvedere (BV) when it transferred to brand new Morden Wharf (MG). Now routes 132 and 180 are upgrading to electrics with the latter lost to Stagecoach with a few hybrids allocated to it as shortfall for when 180 will eventually be diverted to North Greenwich in line with the Elizabeth Line.
Seeing a repeat of 22's 62-reg WVLs sees 16 of 63's MHVs go to Go North West.

Metroline West VW1752-1782 & Go-Ahead London WVN1-23:
VN37773-37803: This batch of 31 B9TLs new to Alperton (ON) for route 83, and withdrawn in time for the depot's closure replaced by a different downsized Alperton depot. Moving with the route was 483 which was a split of 83, taking some of 83's allocated B9TLs as it's own allocation. In the end, central London route frequency cuts in 2021 allowed the withdrawal of these in the form of Volvo B5LHs transferred within the empire.
VN37804-826: This batch of 23 B9TLs new in January/February 2010 was for Northumberland Park (NP)'s route 476, replacing older B7TLs in the fleet at the time. In 2019 the 476 was cut from Euston to King's Cross which saw the displacement of WVNs 18-22 to other depots. In 2022 WVN18 was withdrawn following the loss of 432 to Arriva.

Go-Ahead London WVL435-456/468-480:
WVL445 LJ61GWD, Peckham

WVL435-456:
New for 12 in September-October 2011 though WVL456 started life at Bexleyheath (BX). In 2015 the 12 converted to LTs which meant all of these B9TLs were freed. WVL435 for 337, WVL436-439 for the 432, WVL440-445 for Sutton (A), WVL450 converted to flywheel for 191, WVL451-454 for EL1/EL2 (reallocated to 101 after EL1/EL2 went LT).
Like usual with Go-Ahead, many vehicles transferred left right and centre, though WVL436-439 were reallocated to school routes at Bexleyheath (BX) following 432's loss to Arriva.

In mid 2022, WVL451-453 were withdrawn following Elizabeth Line changes to routes in East London, mainly 101 as well as freed hybrids from central London service cuts.

WVL457-467: New for 20 in February 2012 intended for Blue Triangle at Rainham (BE) but started life at London General's Northumberland Park (NP). None withdrawn as of July 2022.

WVL470 LJ61NWZ, Westow Street

WVL468-480: New for the 249 in February 2012 from Merton (AL) but quickly transferred with the route to Stockwell (SW). In 2016 they transferred to Rainham (BE) for EL1/EL2's service increases with 249 using freed B7TLs from 155. In 2017 the EL1/EL2 going LT meant the ex-249 B9TLs were freed again, this time used for the award win of 101 from Barking River Road (RR) which EL1/EL2 transferred following closure of Rainham (BE).
In mid 2022 these B9TLs were withdrawn from London, transferred to Brighton as 201-216.

WVL480-495: New for 19 in February 2012 from Stockwell (SW), then transferred to Northumberland Park (NP) with half the route in 2015 to make space for newly won 322/432. With 19 lost to Arriva in 2017 these B9TLs were freed.
WVL480-483 reallocated to Merton (AL) for newly won 131.
WVL484-495 reallocated to River Road (RR) for newly won 5.

New February-March 2010 to Northumberland Park (NP) mostly for route 259 with 58 having a part share, the 58 also had it's own allocation from Lea Interchange (LI). It wouldn't be long before this batch would be split, the BG59s solely under one ownership but the BV10s split in half.

WVN24-45 (VN37827-841/843/845/846/848/856-858): Remained at Northumberland Park (NP) for the 259 until it's loss to Arriva in 2017, whereby they were reallocated to Merton (AL) for the win of route 131 with select WVNs doing otherwise.
By mid 2022 WVN24 was withdrawn from service.

VN37842/44/47/49-55/59-64: These moved with 58 from the partial allocation at Northumberland Park (NP) to settle completely in Lea Interchange (LI) as the former depot was bought by Go-Ahead, the majority of 58 was at Lea Interchange (LI) thus made the move. Later on First would sell their remaining operations, the depot moved to Tower Transit whom did not change fleetcodes.

New in January/February 2010 was for Blue Triangle at Rainham (BE) for what was meant to be a tram route, trolleybus route, articulated "bendy bus" route, hybrid route, but instead turned out to be a diesel double deck route with branding. An upgraded version of 369 renumbered into EL1/EL2.
As the routes EL1/EL2 got upgraded, getting more B9TLs on, they were chosen for New Routemasters in 2017 which displaced these red Go-Ahead B9TLs. WVL334-344 to Croydon (C) for newly won X26 and converted to single door.
WVL345-349 for the 5 won from Stagecoach in a new/existing award.
Euro 5 EEV (emission enhanced vehicle) emissions, Volvo D9B 260hp engine coupled with the 6-speed ZF EcoLife gearbox.

By mid-2022 WVL345-349 were withdrawn in 2022 following many frequency cuts in central London which allowed the 5 to be partly converted to LTs allowing for even 101's B9TLs to be withdrawn to Brighton.

WVL345 LX59DFE: Transferred to Thames Travel, converted to single door.
WVL346 LX59DFF: Transferred to Thames Travel, converted to single door.

Go-Ahead London VE1-3:
New in September 2008 was for Putney (AF) as part of a trial evaluating the B9TL type after the cooling fan issues found on B7TLs that were ordered en masse. They were allocated to 85 until 2016 which was lost, thus reallocated to 213 until 2023, which was retained with electric buses.

As of May 2023, VE2/3 have moved to Bluestar's Southampton depot.

Bonus!
Volvo B5TLs:
Not quite B9TLs, but the successor. Harbouring a smaller, less powerful engine, 4 cylinders rather than the usual 6, as well as less torque in comparison to the D9B, the engine of the B9TL. The B5TL was originally offered on the lighter Gemini 3 body. The Gemini 2 was an all round top quality bus. The biggest pet peeve was, it's tungsten-like mass. This was resolved in the Gemini 3.
The first of the B5TLs to debut was the one trialled on the 12, Go-Ahead's V6 (BF63HFE). It was more or less a Gemini 2 at this stage, so it went back to Volvo/Wright with the feedback from the trial.
Another B5TL, this time three of them, another V6 for Go-Ahead, one for Metroline (VW1469) and one for Arriva (VGD1. I haven't been on a B5TL myself yet, though, what's said is that they're upgraded B9TLs despite the smaller engine, and prove to be as powerful. To this day, as of October 2018, there's been no B5TL order in London. I've heard that Go-Ahead couldn't buy back their V6 but who knows.

V6 BF63HFE: Withdrawn?
V6 BJ14KTL: Went back to Volvo.
VW1469 BF63HDG: Acquired by Go-Ahead as WVL510
