I've decided, 'before Transport for London make it, following the Croydon one, I'll save myself from the despair of waiting it and fantasize my own delusions.' This is the very delusion. The delusion I've spent my entire damn March on drawing maps alone.
I should preface that some of the areas would fall under other borough's jurisdictions but the routes enter one of these two boroughs.
The beginning of a new world.
Warning: This is very long.
Also yes this was uploaded on April Fools but I assure you it's not one, I just worked my entire March on this is all...
The foreshadowing to come...? |

[We are] proposing changes to a number of bus routes serving many areas in south London. [We] are also proposing two new bus routes. [Our] proposals would help to make the bus network simpler, more efficient, accessible to key locations and developments, and to ensure our resources are invested in the locations where passenger demand is highest.
The closing date for comments is never... because there isn't a consultation for this as I'm a dictator here.

Proposing to extend the route via Norwood Road, Leigham Vale, Valley Road, Streatham Common North and Streatham High Road to terminate at Streatham Station.
No changes to to how often the buses run on this route.
Routes 355 and P4
Convert routes to double decker buses. No change to how often the buses run.
Route P4 would be diverted via Gallery Road instead of College Road.
Routes 63, 363 and N63
Route 63 runs between King's Cross and Honor Oak, with buses running up to every 6 minutes Monday to Friday peak hours and every 7-8 on Saturday and every 10 minutes on each evening and on Sunday.
Route 363 runs between Elephant & Castle and Crystal Palace, with buses running up to every 8 minutes Monday to Friday peak hours and every 10 on Saturday and every 12 on each evening and on Sunday.

Proposing to extend route 63 from Honor Oak along current 363 line of route to terminate at Crystal Palace and withdraw route 363. The 63 would use Bricklayers Arms flyover to speed up journey time.
Proposing to increase frequency on route 63 up to every 4-5 minutes Monday to Friday peak hours and every 6 minutes on Saturday and Sunday and on each evening buses would run every 8 minutes until 2230 when it will be reduced to every 15 minutes. It would have an overnight service replacing night route N63, with route 63 becoming a 24-hour service with the same frequencies during the night as N63 currently provides.
Route 227 and new route X227
Route 227 between Crystal Palace and Bromley North, with buses running every 8 minutes Monday to Saturday and every 12 minutes on each evening and on Sunday.
There would be a reduction to the Monday to Saturday frequency of the route to every 12 minutes.
This new route X227 would be introduced as a limited stop service between Streatham St Leonard's Church and Bromley North. It would follow the existing alignment of route 227 from Bromley to Crystal Palace and then along Central Hill, Crown Dale, Crown Point, Streatham Common North and Streatham High Road. It would stop at Bromley North Station, Bromley Town Hall, High Street/Mark Square, Bromley Road/St George's Church, Beckenham High Street/War Memorial, Penge Sainsbury's, Crystal Palace Parade, Crown Point, Streatham Station and St. Leonard's Church. It would run every 15 minutes during Monday to Sunday daytimes.
Why propose this?
Routes 12/N12, 40, 172, 176, 356 & 453
By swapping the northern termini of 12/N12 and 453, it allows a better match of capacity with demand, with the superfluous peak frequency of the 453 being less used north of Oxford Circus. Having the less frequent 12 take over the Marylebone section, it would better distribute capacity.
The extension on the 40 allows for relief on routes 176 and 185 by giving extra capacity south of Dulwich as far as Forest Hill. In addition, it gives new links to Lower Sydenham from central London, Elephant and Dulwich.
A reroute of the 176 allows the creation of a direct link between Dulwich and Crystal Palace. It's possible to hopper via 363 from Lordship Lane, though direct links are more attractive. This also creates a Camberwell to Crystal Palace link, one which has been vacant for a long time in history.
Dulwich to Penge is covered by the 197. As for the night equivalent, an extension of the night element of 12 (Oxford Circus to Dulwich) via the 197 through Dulwich, Forest Hill, Sydenham, Penge to Croydon, giving South Norwood a night service once again.
My initial plans for this was 40 and 172 to Lower Sydenham, though the stand is rated for 4 buses, stand could be expanded or a new one built but with this in mind (or brute force, easy peasy), I shifted more to 40 via Lower Sydenham but the 356 being faster and paralleling 356 via Perry Vale makes it redundant in a sense. Therefore the more bizarre but more feasible choice was involving 172 with unintentionally quirky new links. Such as Brockley to Penge.
I also realised that there is some Overground overlapping going on, as both serve New Cross as well as Honor Oak Park and you name it. By usual TfL standards this would be treason of the highest order.
Upon doing calculations I've realised having 172 take the existing 356 route via Thesiger Road and Kent House Road saves more time, enough to save one bus on 172. Whilst Lawrie Park Road might be enough with the significantly reduced frequency and capacity by having 356 in place of 176.
Routes 68, 468 and X68
In order to maximise output with the resources it is best to speed up the current route 68 by having route X68 become a full time route, this would save costs overall and make faster journeys possible whilst matching frequency to demand.
Euston is covered by 168 as far as Elephant & Castle, where the hopper fare would be valid.
Routes 3, 432 and N2
The small reduction in how often the buses run would be alleviated by the support of an extended route 450. Extending the 3 out of Crystal Palace allows for space to be made for 176. In addition, going further than Crystal Palace to Anerley gives a daytime round-the-corner link from Anerley Hill (Anerley Station and Crystal Palace Station) to Crystal Palace Parade just like night time variant N3.
Extending the 432 creates a significantly quicker interchange from Brixton and Crystal Palace to the tram at Birkbeck or the next bus stop ahead at Elmers End. This also creates an equally quick Overground to tram interchange through use of the 432 to Anerley or Crystal Palace. Currently you have to walk to Anerley Hill to catch a 157 or 358 or opt to wait for an infrequent 354 or 356 to interchange with 157 or 358. Making this link direct makes it more attractive and much faster.
The extension of route N2 allows night time coverage of these links.
Routes 315 and 450
By extending route 315, it plugs up several unconnected places together. Clapham Junction to Clapham South and Balham, Clapham Junction to West Norwood, West Norwood to Sydenham, as well as Clapham Junction to Sydenham.
Increasing frequency and capacity of vehicles allows for demand increase as well as allow for quicker easier boarding and alighting of buses with dual door vehicles. This would also counteract significant frequency decrease along Kingswood Drive, Fountain Drive and Westwood Hill where route 450 is currently over twice as frequent but has almost equally small vehicles as the current 315.
An extension of route 450 would relieve the 3 along the Croxted Road corridor directly and indirectly by taking on passengers that would otherwise crowd the 3 by changing at Brockwell Park onto a 68 or 468. Furthermore, a new link to King's College Hospital would be made possible as a result to both served and unserved roads.
Milkwood Road would receive a bus service for the first time in 55 years since the curtailment of route 42. Once again linking Loughborough Junction with nearby Herne Hill as a handy round the corner link as well as the other entrance to King's College Hospital.
Westwood Hill to Crystal Palace is linked by 122 and Lower Sydenham to Crystal Palace is linked by 202. Kingswood Estate would be linked to Lower Sydenham by an extended 315.
New routes 305 and 451
An orbital route following the South Circular Road from one major town centre to another town centre opens the door to many demand flows, many which are done currently but interchanged with other routes. By having one route connect all the dots, it makes journeys quicker, attractive and more feasible.
A route 451 would give Norbury Hill a bus service for the first time, link Norbury to Norwood and Dulwich for the first time, link Norwood to Dulwich and Peckham for the first time, as well as linking Nunhead with nearby New Cross. More new links will also be made to the retail parks in Beddington with an ASDA nearby, IKEA and other retailers.
Having another bus route along Elder Road would slightly assist it, whilst also linking it with Crown Point. Most of Park Hall Road being served means West Norwood and West Dulwich are linked, a missing link between neighbouring towns with Dulwich College just beside West Dulwich Station. Dulwich Picture Gallery and Dulwich Village would also be linked allowing interchange with P4 for further destinations. Dulwich would be linked with Nunhead directly too.
An identified problem would be traffic concerns which could hamper reliability. For operation along Robson Road it would be worthwhile considering moving the parking onto the pavement partially on both sides for better access and reduced tailback in rush hour.
Either way, 12 miles for the 451 whilst 305 would be quite a bit shorter at 9 miles.
Routes 201 and P13
Rerouting 201 at Tulse Hill directly on Norwood Road allows for faster journey time between Herne Hill and Tulse Hill allowing for new round-the-corner and direct links along Norwood Road. This also allows Lancaster Avenue to just have one new route as well as not overbussing Thurlow Park Road.
To compensate, the P13 would be diverted at Thurlow Park Road/Croxted Road to go up Croxted Road, right into Turney Road and pick up line of route towards Peckham.
There is sufficient routes from Peckham to New Cross. From Dulwich and Peckham Rye there would be the 451, from Peckham there would be 36 136 and 436.
Routes 64, 109, 130, 198 and N250
The London Road corridor is sparsely bussed at the middle end as opposed to the top or bottom. A lot of passengers travel between Streatham and Croydon with regular overcrowding on the 109. Alternative routes such as the 60 and 250 are slower, going through Pollards Hill and Green Lane respectively.
In order to solve this, an extra route needs to be provided along the corridor to relieve the 109 along it's busiest points where it's the only route.
To save resources, route 109 would have it's frequency slightly adjusted to better match demand and coordinate with the additional buses per hour provided by extending the 64.
Changing the 130 allows for extra capacity by allowing it to use double deckers simply by rerouting it away from a low bridge. Church Road in Upper Norwood has been explored for a use case of having a route going to Norwood Junction in the form of 363. Whilst that wasn't pursued I've taken on the mantle to involve bringing South Norwood a hospital link via Croydon University Hospital and the 198 was the perfect victim, it brings new links from Croydon University Hospital to South Norwood after all.
ngl I also kinda liked the idea of 196/197/198 all going Norwood Junction even if all three don't share the same stop
Extension of 64's night service into Brixton allows areas of Selsdon and Addington to be linked with the tube whilst also saving on some resources from N64 and N250's overlap. In fairness, having a 24-hour 64 alongside N109 does seem a little something for granted whilst something like N250 is already a questioned existence but very appreciable to Green Lane and Parchmore Road.
Routes 255 and G1
255. Honestly speaking HMP Wandsworth gets a bus even closer to their gates.
Gives roads Allfarthing Lane, Heathfield Road and Magdalen Road a bus service once again since the withdrawal of G2 without a replacement on aforementioned roads. They might not want one but if you've seen my 322 proposal I think you understand the need to limit parallels especially on a 'new section' so to speak
Rerouting the G1 allows it to be faster which would alleviate reliability problems on the route with traffic it faces already with Tooting, taking Clapham South's traffic away from the route to improve reliability.
Extension of the route allows for a round the corner link from Shaftesbury Estate into Latchmere and the Northern Line at Battersea Power Station
Routes 355 and P4
Overcrowding of both very busy routes means either increasing the amount of buses on the route or changing the vehicle type. It's more cost effective to change the size of the buses as opposed to increase the amount of buses where possible.
Routes 322, 415 and 690
Extending route 322 allows for indirect relief on the busy route 37 between Wandsworth and Herne Hill. This also establishes new links from Wandsworth to Wandsworth Common, Clapham South, Clapham North, Tulse Hill, West Norwood and Crystal Palace.
Reduction in frequency in coordination with converted operation to double decker buses allows to match frequency with increased capacity and demand flows. This would cooperate smoothly with 690's lesser used section south of Lambeth Town Hall in Brixton.
Potential need for reroute between Gipsy Hill and West Norwood to allow easier flow of buses through will need to be explored using adjacent roads for one direction for a loop around Vincennes Estate.
Streatham Wells has a poor service with PTAL rated at 1a, with developments to continue along Valley Road the 315 wouldn't be sufficient.
Leigham Vale also has no service with the closest being route P13 and routes on the Norwood Road corridor.
This also allows for quick and direct access to the Thameslink at either Streatham or Tulse Hill, as well as giving Leigham Vale a bus service for the first time.
In addition to this, the northbound Tulse Hill Station stop for routes 2 201 432 P13 no longer being the last stop on 415 allows for extra relief on routes 2 and 432.
An identified problem would be traffic concerns along Valley Road which would slow down road users. For operation along Robson Road it would be worthwhile considering moving the westbound parking onto the pavement partially for better access and reduced tailback in rush hour.
Routes 63, 363 and N63
This simplifies the structure of routes 63 and 363 whilst catering for a consistently more frequent service into the heart of Central London from Crystal Palace and Sydenham Hill.
For better efficiency, there would need to be bus prioritisation changes in central London for stronger reliability of this extended route.
Routes 227 and X227
It was a wonder to me upon doing 227 end to end a few times that there's always at least someone besides me that also takes the 249 or 417, that and neither route being direct from Streatham [Hill] into Crystal Palace, to add to that, it's not exactly justifiable for something like 227 to go hand in hand with both 249 and 417 more on the basis of overbussing without having to decrease frequency on any of these three routes.
So next best solution: Express it.
The solution works more than allowing Streatham to be linked with Bromley, the 227 is already the fastest way to get from Crystal Palace to Bromley, but by splitting 227 into a stopping service and an express service it filters out the huge demand of end-to-end travel whilst giving a more west-east cross-axis orbital [insert keywords] route.
Fun fact: The extra 2 buses to make an every 12 227 and every 15 X227 could've made an every 6-7 227 instead.
If I could've, I'd go the step further into Chislehurst but that would add more resources, so on that basis alone, the 162 can continue to suffer.

Towards the end there was a lack of budget to continue the quality, whatever quality was there to begin with.
Also, I may have made up lies to make this convincing.
Honestly for the most part the rosier language has damaged my psyche but it's something I've been willing to do for a long time and have done. I only realised as I kept copycat pasting TfL consultations, mainly using Sutton-Croydon and Crossrail ones as a template that I have a habit for using plurals. So for the frequency portion I would refer as Mondays to Fridays rather than Monday to Friday. As well as that, I'd elongate sentences to make them appeal like they have more information than they actually do, both to clarify better and to extend word count. The PVR changes I've calculated may be bias towards making savings. May, emphasis on that word.
Either way I hope you enjoyed my glorious work of words and art that I could only wish some of these genuinely become reality as they're more engrained to the realism within me, whilst something like my 305 idea is plausible, in the current climate I'd only expect a new route when Crossrail or Crossrail 2 by the time my grandchildren are about to pass away, starts into consultation.
I literally only added 12/453 and 63/363 to the equation to break even on PVR savings, which is pretty mad for healthy extensions on a plethora of routes plus two entirely new routes.
Even then I found liking 50 to Vauxhall but I'm approaching at this from a 'something has to give' standpoint to nullify an increase overall and preferably go for a decrease overall, which means cutting 88 at Stockwell. Now, before it's extension it wasn't uncommon to see Stockwell turns thanks to protests but even after the extension it's still been the case but I guess having everyone forced to stay home for a long period of time is enough not to hamper 88's reliability whilst the prospect of an every 12 minute 50 would definitely need an increase to combat Vauxhall on top of it's troubles.
Quick calculations however, reducing 88's freq a notch from every 8 to every 9 (PVR 27 > 24) and extending 50 (PVR 15 > 17). Whilst cutting 88 at Stockwell can't cut 3 buses even at every 8.
Thanks for reading, next is another in the series of Better the Network, and until then, stay safe!
451 literally 25 mins + 80 + 80.
