iBus changes 2021

Another short post update of something I've been holding back, but now I have the intention to release as footnotes for my upcoming 2022 Year roundup, similar to ULEZ diesel workings in my 2021 roundup.

Of course I can't start this without a thumbnail or chipping in an experience of my own.

This is definitely not going to be a rant
"West Norwood, Rosendale" versus "Norwood, Bus Garage"
both now only "West Norwood"

Probably mentioned before already but I'll do it again, inspired by seeing the complaints of stuff like Ilford having many blinds for the same place whilst Barking says 'yes' and other inconsistencies that can be pointed out, and I'll chip in two things, a curtailment that has two stands on the 322 as one is unofficial and frankly easier much to the dismay of passengers being West Norwood as you'd see on 2/68, whereas officially the few that would make it to the old 2 (prior to restructure into 322)'s old terminus of West Norwood Rosendale. As a tidbit it is physically possible for 3's to use that 'stand' as a curtailment, though it's first and last stops would be in West Dulwich.
LT686 on South Croxted Road,
but it's far from it's last stop

Another, again 322, is Gipsy Hill. It's "Gipsy Hill" on the 322. Yet the same turn on the 3 is "South Croxted Road." This is more of a 3 problem than a 322 problem, granted the 3 does finish on South Croxted Road, though the same could technically be said for any length of South Croxted Road before the "Gipsy Hill" stop. Whilst the 322's last stop, "Oaks Avenue" is inside West Norwood all things considered but we can overlook that.
A solution to the turning point with two names is one name, the roundabout they use is called Paxton Green whatnot with a pharmacy and group practice and restaurant taking the Paxton name, "Gipsy Hill, Paxton Green" is a compromise for the truth 322 has and the vagueness 3 holds. If pedantic, "Gipsy Hill, Paxton Green Roundabout" though might be a little long, personally at least.
Truth be told in past the 3's South Croxted Road turn was "South Croxted Road, Alleyn Park" so it was specific.
Then in the 90s there was an overdrive in getting rid of qualifiers, eventually making destinations vague at best and wrong at worst. All in the name of simplicity in the blinds.
266's Askew Road turn isn't known as Askew Road. Shock(!) Starch Green.

Route 266 used to have an even more bizarre display for one curtailment courtesy of First. That problem shifted to 218/306/N266 with it's cutback from Hammersmith. The curtailment? It's called Seven Stars Corner. Don't know where it is? Google Maps doesn't either! It's Starch Green. For pub names, The Eagle is closest though buses using pub names nowadays is confined to history.

119 to (insert Croydon terminus name)

WHV43 to Purley Way, Colonnades
Here's an inconsistency: iBus and blinds not being linked. In other places you have their form of bus stop announcer and display (usually LEDs) linked so when the destination is changed, both the interior and exterior receive the order and change accordingly. Allows for elimination of error between a wrong display outside with correct destination inside or vice versa. If need be for reliability issues between one of the modems, an override function can be made, though preferably an avoidable case to lessen need for inconsistencies where possible.

The W15 doesn't serve Cogan Avenue. Cogan Avenue itself is in the centre of the estate. The W15 inherited the section north of Walthamstow when W12 was cut back, which W12 did serve Cogan Avenue. The W15 hasn't and still doesn't, yet has "Cogan Avenue" as it's qualifier.

Circa 2020 the P4's iBus and blinds was "Brixton Station" with the 118 following suit in iBus display, then both reverted to plain "Brixton" on iBus, a little unfortunate.

How about 106's front displays being "Finsbury Park Station" whilst the side is "Finsbury Park, STATION" now? No doubt a recent change when it transferred from Arriva to Go-Ahead, seemingly someone decided to take a note from Metroline's book and apply the capital STATION look.

Barking is an interesting affair too.
169's "Barking" yet 366 using it's stand as a curtailment becomes "Barking, London Road."
238's "Barking" yet 5 using that as a curtailment becomes "Barking Station"
Since writing the above in 2021, it got even more messy with TfL's iBus updates going full swing.
No doubt as a result, many iBus announcements have pauses, ignoring the fact they outright contradict blind displays at times.

=======================================================

So a list of the changes in 2020 and 2021 just to serve as a reminder.

No doubt many of these were observations by other members in the enthusiast community, but I've compiled them into a relatively chronological order.

That wraps up 2021

At some point 146 changed back to plain "Bromley North" with no one noticing, unless I skipped over that which is possible as I'm still human, allegedly.
A photoshop look on an improvement

Some were nice improvements, the comma for "Croydon, Town Centre" in 2022 little at glance, though G1's curtailment change does make it more clear where the hospital is as opposed to simply "Springfield Hospital" as well as where Northend Road is for 89/99, so a true improvement. Stuff like 15 changing to mention Charing Cross was a tad unnecessary and that's before going into detail with 119's change.
Whilst the 119's previous Purley Way, Colonnades which isn't less accurate nor more accurate but appropriate to the main road it turns off. The terminus being referred to as a long gone dead airport last used during World War 2 however is a minus. The blind display prior to iBus just used to be "Croydon Colonnades" but now this is all just iBus and blinds contradicting one another.
Hammersmith has two bus stations, so it makes it worse to mention only "Bus Station", though A+ for effort at least.

In any case, hope you enjoyed it, and until the next one, stay safe!
